AAC Board

The Development Committee Needs YOU!


In 2016, the Board of Directors of the Agility Association of Canada approved the creation of the Development Committee. This committee, composed of AAC members from across the country, has the following mandate:

  • To track and monitor changes, trends, and developments in the sport of Agility in Canada;
  • To investigate ways for the AAC to adapt appropriately in response to evolution within the sport;
  • To ensure that the organization continues to provide opportunities for growth, accomplishment, and enjoyment for those with differing aspirations within the AAC community.

In order to fulfill this mandate, the Development Committee will, from time to time, require input from the agility community at large to inform their recommendations to the Board of Directors. One way for the committee to get useful input is to simply ask for it!

If you are

  • An AAC member in good standing.
  • Active in agility in any capacity.
  • Keen to see the Agility Association of Canada continue to provide excellent agility for everyone nationwide… and
  • Willing to be part of the process.

Please consider applying for a place on the Development Committee “Think Tank”. The Development Committee Think Tank will be a private e-mail list through yahoo that will allow the Development Committee access to the collective wisdom and brain power of the Canadian agility community. The official language of the list will be English, but a French language list may also be created if interest is strong.

From time to time, the Development Committee will pose questions or propose topics for discussion. The Think Tank list will be moderated, but disagreements will be tolerated as long as they are constructive and polite. Once a discussion is closed, the Development Committee will share their recommendations and conclusions with the group.

February 2017 Information Release

The February 2017 Information Release is to provide Clubs, Competitors and Judges with details on changes to the AAC’s measurement process.  The documentation outlines how this will affect each of you, and provides detailed information needed for you to act.  Each of you will contribute in this stage of measuring the AAC dogs for competition on the new jump heights by January 1, 2018.

Competitors

The Changes to Measurement Process document will provide detailed information on what you should select on the AAC Dog ID Application Form as it will vary depending if your dog does not have an AAC Dog ID or your dog has/is currently competing and has a completed or partially completed AAC Dog ID Card.

Once the AAC has received a completed AAC Dog ID Application form, applicants will be emailed a downloadable AAC Dog ID card from AAC to print and take to AAC trials or AAC Re-Measurement Days for dogs to be officially measured.

Judges

Information including what you can expect to see, requirements for wickets/measuring devices, forms, instructions for 2017 and 2018 new measurements and re-measurements are outlined. 

Clubs and Trial Hosts

Jump Heights – Measurement Cut-off

The implementation of new jump heights and dog measurement cut-offs will occur in stages throughout 2017. 

This is AAC’s tentative schedule through to the end of March 2017.

December 2016 – Release Statement of changes to be implemented by January 1, 2018 including new jump height categories and new dog measurement cut-offs.

Measurement Processs

Changes to Measurement Process Commencing January 1 2017

AAC has moved to a downloadable AAC Dog ID card starting January 1st, 2017.

For competitors applying for a new Dog ID number, the new card will have provision for both current measurements and 2018 measurements. It is intended to be used initially as a tri-fold card. After January 1 2018, the 2017 portion can be removed, or folded under, and the card laminated. The replacement card for 2018 measurements of dog that currently has a completed card will be a bi-fold version without the 2017 section.

This following procedure is in place for all measurements carried out in 2017. Any exceptions to the normal measuring process are in effect for 2017 only.

Competitors:

  • If your dog does not have an AAC ID number this can be applied for in the normal manner. You will receive the ID number by e-mail and a pdf copy of the Dog ID card for you to print out and bring to your dog's first trial.
  • If your dog is currently competing and has a completed or partially completed ID card, you can apply for a replacement card via the AAC website or by mail. Your new card will be e-mailed to you in pdf form, with the front part of the card pre-filled with Dog/Owner details. This new card can be used for the 2018 measurements, and the 2017 portion discarded. Replacement printed cards can be mailed, on request, but standard card replacement fees will apply. There will be no charge for e-mailing the replacement 2018 card if requested before 1 April 2018.
  • If your dog already has an ID card but no heights have been recorded, you can choose whether to use that card for 2017 or apply for a replacement card to have the option of both measurements (2017 and 2018) on the same card.
  • There is no change to the existing protocol for measuring dogs that do not have a completed ID card for the current (2017) heights. Two measurements are still required by two different judges on two different days.
  • Dogs requiring measurements for current 2017 heights can also have a measurement for 2018 recorded IF:
    • The club has measuring devices for the new heights AND
    • The dog is over 2 years old or > 23” tall.
  • Re-measurements for 2018 heights can be done any time from 1 January 2017 onwards if the club has the necessary approved and verified measuring devices.
  • For re-measurements, two measurements must be carried out by two different judges. Any exceptions to this process, for the duration of 2017, are noted below.
  • If the dog only has wicket measurements on their completed ID card (</>) then they must be re-measured for 2018 heights
    • Exceptions to the above are if the dog has a height of >23 or <=12 recorded on their card
  • If the dog has TWO exact height measurements, or >23 or <=12, on their completed ID card, they do not require a re-measurement. However:
    • The exact heights noted on the existing card must match the final jump height category circled on the completed card.
    • If either of the exact height measurements fall within ¼” of the new cutoff height, or the two fall either side of the new cutoff height, the dog must be re-measured.
    • The height(s) noted on the existing card must be transferred to the new card and signed by the judge.
    • The judge (or designate) will also record this information on the AAC Dog Measurement Form at the trial.
  • All competitors have the right to request re-measurement even if the dog has an exact height or >23 recorded on their current (2017 cutoffs) completed dog ID card.
  • Height cards from other organizations, even with an exact height noted on them, will not be accepted as proof of height for the re-measurement process.
  • Final measurements for both 2017 and 2018 will be recorded by the AAC results coordinator, so replacements can be requested for lost ID cards. There will be a charge to replace lost ID cards after you have obtained your dog’s final measurement.

Judges: 

  • Be aware that three styles of cards may be seen during 2017.
    • Cards issued pre-January 2017 for new measurements at the current heights
    • Tri-fold cards for new measurements on the 2017 portion and/or re-measurements on the 2018 portion
    • Bi-fold cards for 2018 re-measurements (same as tri-fold card above but with 2017 portion removed)
  • Be aware that measuring devices/wickets for the new heights must have been inspected and approved before use. The regional director may require your assistance as a designate to carry out this task and record approval on the supplementary AAC equipment inspection form. The club should have arranged this beforehand, so please check before carrying out 2018 measurements.
  • There is no change to the measuring protocol if a dog does not have a completed ID card for the current (2017) jump heights
    • For completed 2017 measurements, ONLY the “Height Card Complete” box should be checked.
  • For 2018 re-measurements ONLY:
    • Judges not officiating at a trial may assist in carrying out re-measurements at that trial. The Judge’s name should be noted in full on the Dog Measurement Form
    • Two measurements from two judges are required, but may be carried out by different judges on the same day
    • If the two measurements put the dog either side of a cutoff height, then a third must be done to determine the final 2018 jump height.
    • Dog ID card must be signed AND final Regular 2018 height circled
    • All re-measurements must be recorded on the official AAC Dog Measurement Form in addition to the Dog ID card
    • The AAC Dog Measurement Form will have an extra column to check to indicate that this is a re-measurement for 2018. If the re-measurement is complete, the “Height Card Complete” box should also be checked
  • For NEW measurements for dogs not having a completed ID card:
    • Normal measuring protocol should be followed with the dog requiring two measurements from two different judges on two different days for their ID card to be completed
    • New measurements may only be carried out by the Judges of Record (the judges officiating at the trial)
    • For dogs needing to be measured for competition in 2017, measurements for both jump height cutoffs (current and 2018) may be carried out on the same day.
    • 2018 measurements may only be recorded if the dog is over 2 years or >23”
    • The AAC Dog Measurement Form will have an extra column to check to indicate that this is a measurement for 2018. If the dog measurement is complete, the “Height Card Complete” box should also be checked

Clubs:

  • There is no change to measuring protocol for current (2017) jump heights. The following procedure is for if you wish to offer measuring for the 2018 heights.
  • Re-measurements for 2018 heights can be done any time from 1 January 2017 onwards if the club has the necessary approved and verified measuring devices.
  • Re-measurements must only be carried out at official AAC trials unless a special measuring day is sanctioned by the AAC
  • Judges not officiating at a trial may assist in carrying out re-measurements at that trial. The name of the Judge must be written, either by the trial secretary or the Judge, at the bottom of the Dog Measurement Form, identifying them clearly as measuring assistants.
  • For 2018 re-measurements ONLY, two measurements may be done on the same day but must be carried out by different judges
  • New wickets and measuring devices must be inspected and verified before use. This is the same procedure as inspections for ANY new pieces of equipment. Contact your Regional Director to arrange approval.
  • Ensure that you have the updated AAC Dog Measurement Form available for judges to record measurements for 2018.
  • It is the competitor’s responsibility to request a replacement card for 2018 re-measurements and print it themselves.
  • You are encouraged to inform competitors of the changes to height cards via premium list or trial confirmation
  • You should advise via premium list or trial confirmation whether re-measurement for 2018 heights will be available
  • Measuring days
    • Designated re-measuring days may be organized with a minimum of 2 AAC judges present.
    • This will be a sanctioned AAC event and all AAC policies and procedures will be in effect.
    • For re-measuring days organized in conjunction with a fun match, the fun match does NOT need to be an AAC sanctioned event and is completely under control and conditions of the organizer, and of the property owner.
    • Re-measuring days must be arranged through the AAC administrator.
    • The “Request for Re-measuring Day” form must be submitted to request measuring outside of a sanctioned AAC trial

Jump Heights - Measurement Cut-offs

Over the past year the AAC began evaluating the jump heights and dog measurement cut-offs. This led to research on the effects of jump heights equal or greater than the shoulder and evaluations of what brought competitors to the activity. This included considering dog conditioning and the impact on dogs with mobility issues due to structure.

The AAC reviewed the categories of Regular, Specials, Veteran and Double Drop Veteran and agreed that they still provided for the needs of the majority of dogs as they moved through the competitive cycle from a young to aged dog in agility.

We went on to compare other North American associations with National programs to identify if there were any ideas or trends that would be of benefit to the AAC.

We considered the trends of IFCS, as we are affiliated and a National Team is sponsored to attend their World Championship annually.

After working through numerous variations, we shortened the list to three options that we thought the AAC Membership could proceed with. A survey was distributed to both AAC Membership and Clubs to garner input and identify which would be the best solution.

The results rolled in and were evaluated, and the majority of AAC selected Option 4. There were numerous comments advising that Option 4 may be the best solution but it did not address fully the smaller dog cut-offs to member satisfaction. Taking that into consideration, a good deal more work and discussion followed. We will be implementing a revised Option 4 that incorporates those concerns.

The attached changes will be implemented no later than January 1, 2018. The AAC will provide detailed information in the next several months to address questions from the perspectives of measuring and equipment inspections. Information sheets will be distributed and will be posted to the AAC website for competitors, judges, clubs, vendors and event hosts on how the changes will impact each of you and what actions will be required.

The AAC will seek your assistance over the next year as we work to transition to the new changes as smoothly as possible.

Important Chute News

The Agility Association of Canada has been researching and considering the attributes, safety, and use of the chute in courses at Agility Association of Canada events for some time.

The chute was introduced as one of the original tests in agility of confidence from the dog and the handler to manage a course. As the chute does not measure skill or speed but rather confidence in team through the dog trusting the handler while entering a “blind trap” in a controlled situation. Command overrides instinct. As speed shouldn’t be the sole determinant in agility success, it has remained, and is probably one of the few obstacles left that measures that aspect of teamwork.

Therefore, in efforts to reduce a perceived stress to handler’s concerned about their dog’s safety, though the chute receives far less incident reports for injuries than other equipment in the Agility Association in Canada the following has been reviewed. Fabric composition and material length, fabric being weighted on the bottom side to reduce twisting and flipping, dog’s footing on a curved floor vs. flat floor in the frame, exits of the obstacle and distances to other obstacles in course design to ensure the dog can get re-oriented, the angles to obstacle entries to assist handlers who miscalculate their dog’s paths, the methods used to secure the chute to the site surface, and the composition and shape of the frame.

Thank you to everyone whom has voiced their opinions regarding the chute and its use in the AAC.

As of September 1, 2016, the Agility Association of Canada suspends the use of the chute in competition as there are items that can’t be addressed in the near term.

Judges may substitute one of the following in place of the chute in their course designs: 1 or 2 jumps; broad jump; or a tunnel.

MANAGERS AND SUPPORT STAFF FOR THE 2017 NATIONAL TEAM

The AAC and the AAC National Team Management Group are looking for people to fill the following positions with the 2017 AAC National Team, who will be competing in Spain at the end of April, 2017:
Manager / Assistant Manager / Canine Chiropractor / Canine Physiotherapist.

If you're supremely organized, great under pressure and up for a little adventure, consider applying for a position with the Management of the AAC National Team.

Manager/Assistant Manager duties will include working with the AAC National Team Management Group to:

  • assist the team with all aspects of preparation before / during/ and after the event, including making travel arrangements, and complying with health/veterinary requirements;
  • work to coordinate information and define/accomplish goals;
  • work with team members to coordinating fundraising campaigns;
  • assist team members with selecting and acquiring uniforms and other gear;
  • coordinate remote coaching and other preparatory exercises;
  • act as liaison between team members and event officials at the event;
  • manage team members at the event

Those with previous experience in organizing international travel with dogs, or who have International agility competition experience will be given priority, as will those who have demonstrated a commitment to the AAC National Team program. Great communication and people skills, a flexible schedule, and bilingualism will also be considered assets.

The Manager and Assistant Manager will also be expected to be in attendance at the AAC National Championships (at their own cost), in order to to assess the potential candidates for draft selection, and help with scoring and fundraising at the event.

These are volunteer positions; however flight/hotel/vehicle expenses for both positions will be covered for the World Championship event. Application forms can be found on the AAC National Team page, and deadline for applications is June 9, 2016.


Chiropractor/Physiotherapist duties will include:

  • advising team members on how to physically prepare their dogs in the months before competition
  • traveling with the team to assist at the competition with Chiropractic/Physiotherapy needs
  • assisting with the sponsorship/fundraising effort dedicated to travel expenses for these positions

Those with previous experience with looking after dogs at an International agility competition experience, and those who are also Veterinarians will be given priority, as will those chiropractors who can meet the needs of both human and canine athletes. Great communication and people skills, a flexible schedule, and bilingualism will also be considered assets.

Depending on the efficacy of our fundraising efforts, some portion of the travel expenses for the health care practicioners may be covered. If some portion of the expenses are covered, the fee for services to the team would be reduced by a similar amount.
